General Information
He convenes a three-year fellowship in structural chemistry doctoral work under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Masters. The position is available to start January 1, 2012 or as soon as possible. The group employs the technique of gas electron diffraction (GED) to study the molecular structure in the gas phase with the current focus in the new area of determining the structure of short-lived species. The GED device has been modified for use as appropriate, systems of very high inlet temperature to generate transient species in the area. This project will continue the development of new methods for the generation of species, focusing on the methods of photolysis.

Applicants also must apply for a doctoral scholarship from the UC (closing date October 15, 2011). Two types of scholarships are available at UC scholarships for Canterbury NZ citizens or permanent residents, and the University of California International Doctoral Scholarships for international students. Applications will be evaluated from August 1, 2011, until an appointment has been made.

Eligibility
Applicants must have (or be about to receive) an honors degree (at least 2.1 or its equivalent) in Chemistry or Physics. Experience in the photolysis methods desired, along with the use of computational techniques for the determination of the structure. A strong interest in the development of new experimental methods is essential.
Amount: $ 25,000 per year
